In the last seven years, 20th Century Fox, Warner Bros. Pictures, Fox 2000 Pictures, Universal Pictures, Paramount Vantage, Fox Searchlight Pictures, Walt Disney Pictures, Cartoon Network, UPN, BET, VH1, Showtime and HBO have all committed to a Michael Elliot project without a script. “If there was an Academy Award for pitching, you’d win it hands down,” said Bob Weinstein, co-founder of Miramax and The Weinstein Company after hearing Michael pitch. So what’s Michael’s secret? Is it simply his ideas? The answer might surprise you: Michael doesn’t credit his success to his ideas, but to his unique approach to presenting them. Michael shared some of his unique recipe for pitching success last month with the Live Webinar “Pitch to Sell” Part 1. “I have DVDs from some of the best pitch teachers in the business (Michael Hauge, Skylar Pilar, just to name a few) and BRUH- they can't hold water to what I just heard from you,” wrote attendee Rod Wilson. “You opened up a whole new level of understanding for me in how to convey my story. GREAT STUFF!”
In “Pitch to Sell” Part 2 Michael will provide the answers to questions such as:
- How to make your listener
hang on every word?
- How to get listeners
emotionally involved in your pitch?
- What parts of your story do
you emphasize in your pitch?
- What’s the best way to pitch
your Second Act?
- How can you make your pitch
more appealing to buyers?
Plus:
- How to pitch your project in 60 seconds and generate interest?
Get the answers to these questions and more at “Pitch to Sell” Part 2 – Live Webinar, which will include a 30-minute Q&A session with Michael.

Elliot pitched a film idea called “Got Milk?” to a room full of execs at Universal
Pictures, including the studio’s (then) President of Production, Scott
Stuber. The pitch was long, almost
45 minutes, highlighted by Michael literally ‘acting out’ the potential film’s
big Trailer Moment. An hour after
the pitch, as Michael was heading to his next scheduled pitch meeting, he got a
call. “No need to go to the next meeting,”
said his agent. “Universal wants to make a preemptive
purchase of your idea, now.” By 8 pm that same day, the deal was closed. Universal Pictures had agreed to pay
Michael $425,000 and another $375,000 if the movie got made. Once Michael met with the president of
the UPN network (now called The CW).
Before Michael began his pitch (for a 2-hour special), he played a
self-produced, 4-minute video presentation supporting the idea he was there to
pitch. The moment the video ended,
the network president turned to Michael and said: “I’m sold. Let’s make a deal.” One week later, UPN offered $1 million to help close the
deal. In 2005, Michael used a DVD to
pitch a film idea called “The Jump Off” to New Line Cinema. The following day, New Line purchased
the pitch $800,000; over $400,000 of which was guaranteed. The producer and the New Line exec told
Michael that it was his DVD that sold the pitch. That same year, Michael pitched a film idea he called “How
to Get a Record Deal” to Paramount Pictures (and every other studio in
Hollywood) and received a “pass.”
Two years later, Michael re-pitched the same idea to Paramount. This time, the studio purchased it for
$250,000 against $800,000. ................................................... Michael’s unconventional tactics, and ‘out-of-the-box’ thinking
has led to a career that has included four produced credits. Among them are the films “Like Mike,” “Brown
Sugar,” and “Just Wright,” which was released in theaters in May of this
year. “Just Wright” which stars
Queen Latifah, Common and Paula Patton, will be released on DVD September 14,
2010.
